The Basics

How Laser Hair Removal Works

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser selectively heats the hair shaft, which transfers heat down to thermally damage the hair follicle. A permanently damaged follicle stops producing new hair.

Hair grows in three stages — and only hair in the active growth phase is effectively treated per session. That's why you need multiple sessions over time to catch every follicle at the right moment.

What's the minimum age for laser hair removal?

You must be 18 or older to receive laser hair removal at LaserHere Toronto.

Will my hair ever grow back?

Follicles that are fully destroyed during treatment won't grow hair again. However, your body can develop new hair follicles in the future due to age, hormonal changes, or genetics — so occasional touch-ups may be needed years later.

We can only treat hair that's currently growing. Dormant or future hair follicles can't be killed before they exist.

Results & Sessions

How Many Sessions, How Permanent?

How permanent is laser hair removal?

It is permanent once the hair follicle is destroyed. However, some follicles are only injured during a single session — and your body will heal those, allowing hair to regrow.

This is why most Toronto clients need 5–8 sessions on average. The older you are, the less regrowth you typically see long-term.

How many sessions will I need?

Most Toronto clients need 5 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart to permanently reduce the majority of hair. Some factors affect how many:

  1. Age — younger clients typically need more sessions because their hair is still developing
  2. Hair density and thickness — coarser, denser hair may need additional sessions
  3. Hormonal factors — pregnancy, PCOS, and certain medications can affect hair growth
  4. Body area — face/neck typically needs more sessions than legs or underarms
Is laser hair removal worth it?

For most Toronto clients, yes — significantly. The average person spends $1,800+ per year on shaving supplies, razors, waxing appointments, and threading. Permanent reduction pays itself back in 1–2 years and saves you that money for life.

That said, it depends on your skin type, hair color, hair thickness, and overall health. Book a free consultation and we'll give you a realistic assessment of what to expect for your specific situation.

How can I measure if it's working?

Simple: take a "before" photo. Take a clear photo of the area you'll be treating before your first session (and before shaving, if possible). After 5–8 sessions, take a new photo from the same angle and compare. The difference is dramatic.

Preparation

Before Your Toronto Appointment

How should I prepare for my laser hair removal appointment?

A few things to do before every session:

  1. Shave the area 1–2 days before your appointment. We do not shave you at the clinic.
  2. Avoid tanning, sun exposure, and tanning beds for 2–3 weeks before AND 2–3 weeks after each treatment.
  3. Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams between sessions — only shave. The laser needs the hair shaft inside your skin.
  4. Arrive with clean, product-free skin (no lotions, oils, or makeup on the treatment area).

Important: Pregnant or nursing clients cannot be treated. No exceptions.

Why do I have to shave before laser hair removal?

The laser needs to target the hair shaft inside your skin — that's where the follicle lives.

Hair above the skin still absorbs laser energy, but it burns up uselessly and can cause unnecessary skin irritation. Shaving keeps the underground portion intact (which we want to target) while removing the surface portion (which would just burn).

Do not wax or pluck — that removes the entire hair including the part we need to treat.

Safety & Skin Types

Pain, Safety, and All Skin Tones

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most clients describe it as a quick snap of a rubber band — and significantly less painful than waxing.

Our Candela GentleMax Pro uses a dual cooling system (cryogenic spray + chilled air) to minimize discomfort throughout the session. Most Toronto clients report it's far easier than they expected.

I have low pain tolerance — is it going to be unbearable?

You'd be surprised. Most clients who come in nervous about pain leave saying it was far easier than they anticipated. The cooling system makes a huge difference, and sessions are quick (15–45 minutes depending on the area).

If you're still concerned, mention it when you arrive and we'll go extra slowly and gently on your first session so you can build confidence.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin tones?

Yes — completely. Our Candela GentleMax Pro has two laser modules:

  1. Alexandrite (755nm) — optimized for lighter Fitzpatrick skin types (I–III)
  2. Nd:YAG (1064nm) — optimized for darker Fitzpatrick skin types (IV–VI)

This dual-laser system lets us safely treat every skin tone, from very pale to very dark. During your initial consultation, we'll perform a small test patch and calibrate the laser for your specific skin type before starting full treatment.

Our Technology

The Laser We Use

What kind of laser does LaserHere use?

We use the Candela GentleMax Pro — the gold-standard medical laser for permanent hair reduction. It's FDA and Health Canada approved.

This is a true medical laser, not IPL (intense pulsed light), which is what most discount clinics use. IPL is less targeted, weaker, and produces inconsistent results — meaning more sessions and worse outcomes. The Candela GentleMax Pro is engineered specifically for hair follicle destruction across all skin types.

Do you offer electrolysis?

No. LaserHere specializes exclusively in laser hair removal. We don't offer electrolysis, waxing, threading, or any other hair removal services. We do one thing — and we do it well.

For electrolysis, you'll need to find a different specialty clinic in Toronto.
